Bronzers imitate the healthy look of the sun. They are also used as correctors to warm up the complexion. Applying bronzer is also a great way to add a healthy glow all over the face to even out color differences, especially through the neck. Bronzers work on all skin tones except porcelain because bronzer can make porcelain skin look dirty. Bronzer works as a blush for very dark skin. On all other skin tones, blush should be used over bronzer to add a pop of bright color.

Bronzers are available in flat or shimmering powder, gel stick, and cream formulas.

Choosing the Bronzer Color

Bronzers work best when the skin looks natural. They can be brown-, red-, blue-, orange-, and sometimes yellow-based. [1] A common mistake is to choose a bronzer that’s too dark for your skin and blend it all over the face, which can look muddy.[2]

Generally, for fair skin, pick the lightest shade in the range. For medium skin, go with the middle color; try the deepest shade on dark skin.[2] Specifically, if your skin is:

  • Alabaster – Pinky shimmer or peach
  • Light – Beigy borwn with a bit of pink
  • Medium – Browny pink with only a bit of orange for warmth
  • Medium-dark – Brownish orange
  • Dark – Brownish red
  • Deepest – Brownish blue

Test the bronzer on your jawline; it should look golden. [2]

Preparing the Skin for Bronzer

Smooth on your regular foundation where needed, and apply concealer under the eys on blemishes. If you have oily skin, dust translucent powder on any shiny areas to keep bronzer from looking too dark in those spots. [2]

Applying Powder Bronzer

Powder bronzer is the easiest to apply. Use it to add a tint of color to the skin and to correct light foundation on red skin. [3] Use small circular motions when applying. [2]

  1. Using a large, flat brush, apply a small amount of bronzer for even distribution. Start on the apples of the cheeks.
  2. Next, dust over the nose and chin.
  3. Brush bronzer onto the neck area.
  4. Turn the face to either side to make sure the color is well blended.

Applying Gel Bronzer

  1. Choose the color to enhance your natural shade. Begin at the apple of your cheeks.
  2. Gently apply bronzer to the cheeks, forehead, nose and chin. Apply lightly. You can always add more.
  3. Apply bronzer lightly to the areas around the lips, forehead, neck, and ears.
  4. Blend with a clean hand. Add more bronzer if necessary.

Bronzers as Correctors

Some women have more color on their face and chest and less on their neck. Use bronzer to warm up the paler skin on the neck. For those with very red areas, sunspots, or rosacea, bronzers can be used to even out the skin tone.[4] If the shade of bronzer looks too dark or heavy on your skin, dip a clean powder brush in loose translucent powder, tap most of it off, and lightly swirl the brush over the bronzer to soften it. .[5]
